In fact, we look at every new building project as a chance to create something special; because every job offers an opportunity to excel.
However, once in while, a build comes along and simply blows the team’s mind – such as the Red Hill House and Studio.
Considering the stunning outcome, it won’t surprise you to learn that Red Hill House and Studio is the brainchild of architect couple Zuzana Kovar and Nicholas Skepper of Zuzana and Nicholas, who painstakingly designed this space to suit their needs to a T.
The result is a home that serves not only as a haven of serenity for their family of four but also includes an impeccable workspace for this creative power couple.
And not only because of the intricate design incorporating sliding doors, strategically placed openings and a pop-up skylight that required nothing short of surgical precision.
The biggest challenges for the Thirdson Construction team were two-fold: firstly, task of demolishing and reconstructing the lower story without disturbing the completed top level or compromising structural integrity; secondly, the notoriously rocky material inherent to the Red Hill area.
Then there was the compact size of the site, which complicated access, and the plain reluctance of some tradies and suppliers to even consider the architects’ plans as feasible. So, really, this was not a simple job. Luckily, the Thirdson crew consists of the type of scallywags who see complications as an invitation to get creative.
Using smaller machinery, including a track-mounted spider crane (which, admittedly, had to be operated from the neighbouring yard), meant slightly slower progress, but it enabled us to execute our brief with precision and minimal disturbance to the outdoor space.
Did it require specialist skill? Absolutely.
Thankfully, the Thirdson Construction team includes a plethora of specialised sub-contractors.
Our director David is an old hand when it comes to acting as a go-between, and his professional expertise is second only to his diplomatic skill; so after much rationalising, weighing up and coaxing frayed tempers, he managed to secure the exact materials and features specified by the clients; even the more unorthodox ones.
Steel mesh, hoods, screens, awnings, plates, balustrades and wall linings… all these critical components required a complex and collaborative process from sourcing the subcontractors to drawing the products to site measurements to critical datum lines (to line up with the shadow-line details of the walls). While this was obviously time-consuming and incredibly labour intensive, it also brought forth an incredible result.
Red Hill House and Studio was named Australian House of the Year in 2024
More importantly, it has transformed a humble worker’s cottage into an elegant-yet-cosy home for Zuz and Nicholas’ family, a place that will surely see the creation of many more astonishing buildings and, most importantly, a space for their creative and personal growth.
